The Scent Lover’s Guide: 6 tips to Make Your Candles Last Longer

Maximize your fragrance experience with essential tips for a flawless burn, richer aroma, and longer-lasting Candle & Bloom moments.

You’ve just brought home your new handcrafted Candle & Bloom candle. You light it up, ready to elevate your everyday moments and fill the room with your favorite scent. But did you know that how you care for your candle completely changes how it burns? To get the most out of your fragrances and keep your aesthetic flawless, every scent lover needs to know a few basic rules.

Here are our top 6 secrets for a perfect, long-lasting burn:

🕒 The First Burn is Everything 🕒

The most important moment in your candle’s life is the very first time you light it. Wax has a “memory.” If you blow it out before the top layer of wax has completely melted from edge to edge, it will create a “tunnel” down the center during future burns.

Pro Tip: Always let your candle burn for at least 2 to 3 hours the first time you light it, ensuring the melt pool reaches the glass.

Always Trim Your Wick

A long wick creates a high flame, which leads to black smoke, soot on your beautiful glass jar, and a candle that burns way too fast. Before every single use, make sure to trim the wick to about 5 mm. You can use a professional wick trimmer or simply pinch off the burnt top with your fingers once it’s completely cool.

Keep It Away from Drafts

It might look beautiful next to an open window, but wind is a candle’s worst enemy. Drafts from windows, fans, or air conditioning units cause the flame to dance around. This not only leads to an uneven burn and black soot, but it also burns through your wax much faster. Find a calm, still spot for your Candle & Bloom moments.

Neither too-brief burns nor never‑ending ones

We know it’s tempting to leave your favorite scent burning all day, but you should actually blow it out after 4 hours. Burning a candle for too long causes the wick to become unstable and the wax to superheat, which can ruin the essential oils and change the scent profile. But remember: the ideal burn time is between 1 and 3 hours. Anything shorter won’t allow the wax to melt properly, and anything longer risks overheating your candle. Give it a rest, let it cool, and light it again later.

Extinguish It the Right Way

Use a candle snuffer. Avoid blowing out your candle—it’s harsh on the wick and creates unnecessary smoke and soot. Instead, use a snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax to extinguish it cleanly and keep your candle burning beautifully.

Know When to Say Goodbye

For safety reasons, never burn a candle all the way to the absolute bottom of the jar. When there is only about 13 mm of wax left, it’s time to let it go. Burning a candle completely empty can cause the glass to overheat and potentially crack. But don’t worry—you can easily clean out the remaining wax and repurpose our aesthetic jars to hold makeup brushes, pens, or small plants!
